North Jersey reported that before the couple found out their sentencing, U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas lectured the couple about their, “glaring omissions” in their financial disclosure forms. The judge reportedly said, “I had to put the sentencing off because the financial disclosure wasn’t in.” The site also reports that the judge read off several items including, home furnishing, cars and recreational vehicles that were all not reported to the probation office by the couple. The Daily Mail reports that after the judge read off the list of items, Teresa and Joe did not have an answer for her. Instead they reportedly, “claimed they had hired an accountant and provided that person with their financial information.” Teresa & Joe Giudice: How Their Legal Troubles Began Teresa and Joe’s legal troubles began in 2009, when the couple filed for bankruptcy. While they were initially going to auction off some of their furniture to raise funds, the auction was eventually canceled. (Which did not please the courts.) They were charged in July 2013 on a number of counts of fraud, as well as Joe’s failure to file a tax return from 2004 to 2008. Teresa’s attorney told the Associated Press that she would plead not guilty, and they did, in Aug. 2013. However, the couple clearly decided to change tacks in order to get a more lax sentence for Teresa, who needs to care for their four children Gia, Gabriella, Milania, and Audriana. Their guilty plea was a result of a deal made with federal prosecutors. Under federal sentencing guidelines, Joe would have to face 37 to 46 months for the crimes for which he was accused, while Teresa would have to face 21 to 27 months for her complicit but lesser involvement.
